There is beautiful scenery with marvellous, mainly sandy, beaches and a mild climate due to the effects of the Gulf Stream. There are plenty of interesting things to do and see for the casual visitor, plus fabulous activities for the enthusiast such as fishing, bird watching, whale watching (see whales-dolphins-ireland.com), pony trekking, sea kayaking, sailing and golf. For food lovers West Cork has some of the best natural produce in Europe, plus a wide range of restaurants, gourmet shops and cafes in which to sample them.

Crab Cottage is also a convenient base to explore much of West Cork including Cork City, Kinsale, Clonakilty, Glandore, Castletownsend, Baltimore The Pebble Beach at Mill Cove - just seven minutes walk from Crab Cottage(including the islands of Roaringwater Bay), Skibbereen and Bantry. Delightful driving tours include the coast road from Clonakilty to Kinsale and the three peninsulas to the West – Beara peninsula, Sheep’s Head peninsula and Mizen head. For bird watching the estuaries at nearby Rosscarbery and Courtmacsherry are particularly good.
